Cohorts
A cohort is a group of students who go through a class together, on the same schedule, instead of each student joining on their own start date. The classic classroom model, moved online.
The default in self-paced e-learning is isolation. Every student starts alone, works alone, and finishes (or quietly quits) alone. When a group starts the same week, shares the same deadlines, and hits the same milestones together, the course starts to feel like something you're part of rather than something you're grinding through. Students in a cohort can ask each other questions, compare notes, and feel the mild social pressure of a shared pace. Workshops and live trainings get the same benefit: everyone in the room arrived at the same time and is working on the same thing.
In Torii, a cohort is a native feature with its own custom content controls. Attach values to the group itself, like a start date, an instructor, or a section number, and every member of each cohort can see their group's unique information. Membership in the cohort is managed by tags, so enrollment in a cohort can be automated the same way as everything else.
Cohorts work with every LMS Torii supports: Sushi LMS (built in), plus LearnDash, LearnPress, LifterLMS, and Sensei. Start a cohort, enroll its members in the course, and the group moves through it together regardless of which LMS hosts the content.
Public and private cohorts
A public cohort takes whoever enrolls. Students from different companies and different countries end up in the same room, and the networking is part of what they're paying for. Most independent course creators run public cohorts.
A private cohort is limited to one organization's people: all the new hires from a quarter, or a team going through training together. The employer usually wants shared vocabulary and team bonding more than outside contacts, and often needs the discussion to stay internal. For private team cohorts, the Group Accounts module is a natural companion: the employer owns the seats, assigns them, and pays one invoice.

One model sells volume, the other sells the room. What each is actually good for, what neither can do, and why the answer is often both.
Cohort VariablesOne course, many sections: attach an instructor, a meeting link, or a section number to each cohort and let every page show the reader their own group's details.
Running a CohortSet up a scheduled run of your course: create the cohort, automate enrollment with tags, drip content on the group's schedule, and display cohort-specific information.
